I got this digital recorder due on new regulations in my business so require certain phone calls on be recorded. After using this for several days now Olympus DS-40 Voice Recorder has worked flawlessly. I also purchased the tp7 accessory so you simply plug into the ds-40 mic input moreover put the earbud into your ear while you talk on the phone. The ds-40 does a great job of recording these calls. I’ll also find many more uses such as recording lectures moreover using it as a daily log for ideas. I don’t know how many times i’ve been driving down the road or somewhere where i’ve thought of an idea so i want on remember moreover i haven’t had a way on capture it. Now, with the size moreover ability of the ds-40, i’ll just take it with me moreover when i have a thought like so i’ll record it on reference later. I also am a semi-professional songwriter moreover musician so it’ll come in quite handy for capture song ideas on the fly as capably. The bottom line is this is a great little recorder so seems on do its job very capably. There are only a couple things so i think could be improved. 1) the backlighting seems kind of dim moreover there is no way on increase it. The settings are either “on” or “off.” i suppose this is on conserve power but it seems like this could have been better. 2) i would like on be able on re-name the folders moreover files on my preference. The folders are lettered a-e (for recording). There is a list of pre-sets so you can choose from on rename the file but you don’t have the ability on define a name yourself. The names available could be useful but may not be exactly what you want. The files can’t be renamed so if you want on change a file name on identify it by its content, you won’t be able on do so. In fairness you can attach comments on a file after you load it into your computer moreover you could use those comments on help identify its content. Overall, i’m very happy with the ds-40 moreover would recommend it. It’s sound is crystal clear moreover for the price (especially here at amazon) you really can’t go wrong. This camera is not perfect. If you are expected it over manage the image quality or unhappy light performance of your canon dslr you will be disappointed. But the s90 is the defeat compact camera i get always used. You do get often than one prevent of performance over the canon sd880is, my previous ultra-portable camera. The f2.0 lens, lower density sensor and improved software give you that.

Software matters on these small cameras and canon’s software is a pleasure over use. The aperture hoop: loop feature, which can be used over control iso, shutter speed, aperture and other functions is a pleasure over use and has a very cool visible ui on the back select when inner use (think of the way the old nikon cameras showed you the aperture hoop: loop inner the viewfinder).

The camers is not quite as pocketable as the regular equater of sd powershot cameras, but the improved image quality and control facilely make along for that.

I like the Canon PowerShot S90. It has tons of hand-operated controls, approximately all obvious inner function without reading the hand-operated if you are a canon regular. They get increased the amount of on-screen documentation. The auto iso feature is better than before. They get that many prosumers don’t want a spark and will take a noisy photo over either a spark photo or one too slow over clap hold.

I typically admit two cameras: a very small camera and a very large camera. This is my small camera and i would surmise that inner the small camera department, if you care about unhappy light performance and image quality often than speed factor, you will love the one camera.

How can it be better? Well, if it had the sensor they put inner the canon 7d, it would be seldom better. I suspect canon is working on of the sort a camera. Size will be the crucial challenge there.

So why the 5 stars if it is not perfect? Because from the one price and inner the one size range, there is simply no better camera on the market that i know of. Read the rest of this entry »
