The picture quality with this TV is simply excellent. Compared it with increased expensive Panasonic “Infinite Black” G style and it’s impossible to see the difference in real movie content. You need to be altogether darkness and have very good quality, low noise signal with large pieces of black and hang them side to side to notice a slightly darker black in G versions. Of course, just watching TV you will never think If only blacks were more deeply.
I’ve watched Hi-def programs over the air, from blu-ray, Netflix via Roku, and from Laptop or computer over HDMI. Almost all modes 480/720/1080 progressive along with interlaced displayed correctly, and TV did a good job upscaling lower quality to native 1080. No problems with motion, absolutely no blurring, no colour fading or runoffs. TV does have a slightly reduce moving picture resolution 900 lines (vs 1080 lines in prime models), but it’s fairly impossible to notice that without measurements. Therefore sports viewers will probably be satisfied. Also, over a positive side, the actual screen is not as shiny as the majority of other plasma televisions, so reflections are usually subdued.

I’ve been applying this set for a few days today, so I can’t touch upon “image retention” problems that previous generations had. Supposedly the particular phosphors used in this set are improved through previous year, and also reportedly they last longer. Just be sure you turn on your “pixel orbiter” to avoid burning within the logos and avoid extended display of noise images. You can also work “scrolling bar” once a day for 15 minutes for the first 7 days to age the phosphors evenly. Not all plasma owners believe a new break-in period is necessary for that later generations of plasma TVs, no plasma manufacturers now suggest their models require break-in.

The description Amazon (and it seems now they removed it) seemed to suggest that TV were built with a built-in Wi-Fi. It doesn’t, you need to buy a separate Wi-Fi USB adapter for that. Due to deficiency of adapter I cannot know if IPTV and DLNA are working as expected. The other negative is normal to all Panasonic VIERA TC-P42S30 plasmas, which can be high power ingestion. You don’t find this info advertised anywhere, simply because this set is rated at a whopping 339W. The built-in audio is weak, they have two tiny 10W sound system. It’s fine for casual watching TV programs, in case you want to watch movies you almost certainly want to invest in a separate audio system.
